Every Subaru owner eventually faces the question: fix it myself or book it in with a specialist? Simple jobs like changing wiper blades, topping up fluids, or swapping an air filter are safe for most owners to handle at home and can save real money. But once you are into timing belts, turbo components, head gaskets, or anything involving the ECU, the risk of costly mistakes goes up sharply — Subaru boxer engines have their own quirks that a general mechanic (or a confident DIYer) can easily get wrong. Our rule of thumb at the workshop: if a job involves the drivetrain, turbo system, or safety-critical components like brakes and suspension, bring it in. We would rather advise you honestly and save you a repeat repair than watch a small job turn into a big bill.
